biography

Felicitas Ehrlich – called Liesel in her family – was born in Bad Kissingen on January 5, 1926 as the second child of Franz and Adele Ehrlich. Her father was a co-owner of the renowned fashion shop Ehrlich in Ludwigstrasse, which enabled Liesel to enjoy a beautiful and well protected childhood.

She attended the “Institut der Englischen Fräulein” (Mary-Ward-School) but had to leave her hometown with her family in April 1937 when the situation became more and more difficult and dangerous in the face of Nazi terror. The family emigrated to England where “Onkel Ludi”, a wealthy relative, initially welcomed them in his country house in Bexley in the County of Kent. Kissingen-born “Onkel Ludi” (Ludwig Ehrlich) had emigrated to South Africa at the age of 14 and become wealthy as an entrepreneur in the diamond and tourist business. He then moved to London and worked as an entrepreneur in the English aircraft and oil industry. When the Nazi Era became increasingly dangerous for his relatives in Germany, he became the lifeline of many members of the Ehrlich family, took them up in his country house and cared for them.

In the Zionist movement in England, Liesel Ehrlich got to know her future husband Herbert Schreiber. After the war, they emigrated to Israel. There she died in 2011.
