biography

Auguste Geffner belonged to the Jews who had immigrated from Eastern Europe and were only a small group within the Jewish Community of Bad Kissingen. The information in the registration files regarding date and place of birth is contradictory. Auguste was born on January 15 or 21, 1894 in Czernowitz/Galicia (in other files in Wymozowa or Wegmozona) as the youngest of five children of Leib Geffner and his wife Pesie (Betty) née Oberweger. The Geffner family had left their Galician hometown in the hope of being able to live in better conditions in Germany and had first found a place to stay in Würzburg. In 1904, Leib Geffner had already lived in Bad Kissingen for some months and in 1906 they moved into the spa town for good and lived in Promenadestrasse. Auguste’s father opened a spa boardinghouse and an Israelite Restaurant (“israelitische Speisegaststätte”) there.

The family lived in this house at Promenadestrasse 24 and Auguste's father opened an "Israelite restaurant" here.

In September 1920, Auguste married Alois (also known as Elias) Abzug from Worona in Galicia, who had moved from Bad Reichenhall in 1919. He was listed as a Polish citizen in the registration files, which is why he was temporarily expelled from Bavaria in November 1920 by decision of the town council. At the request of his wife Auguste, the town of Bad Kissingen finally granted him tolerated status, which could be revoked at any time.

The Abzug couple initially lived at Promenadestrasse 5b, where Alois Abzug ran the restaurant founded by Auguste's late father Leib Gessner. A short time later, the couple moved to Bachgasse and set up a laundry business there. Between 1929 and 1933, they both lived at Salinenstrasse 29 and finally briefly at Promenadestrasse 5, before the couple emigrated to Palestine in November 1933 - a few months after the National Socialists came to power.
