biography

Rosa Leuthold, née Bergmann came from a family that had been living in Völkersleier for many generations and had a decisive influence on the life of the Jewish Community there. She was born on March 23, 1872 as the daughter of Meier Bergmann and his wife Babette Frank. Her father was – like many of his family had been – a cattle dealer and had headed the Israelite Community of Völkersleier for many years.

In May 1891, Rosa Bergmann married the Bad Kissingen tailor and merchant Salomon Leuthold and moved to Bad Kissingen to him at Marktplatz 2. There he ran a textile shop and also worked as an insurance agent. He was very respected in the Jewish Community, in which he had been elected a substitute in the Cultural Administration. The three children of the young couple Leo (*1892), Martha (*1896) and Gertrud (*1898) were all born in Bad Kissingen.

According to her husband’s registration card, Rosa Leuthold died in Berlin in June 1933. Maybe she was staying with her children Leo and Martha who lived in Berlin. Her youngest daughter Gertrud had already died there in 1926.

The two older children could flee from Germany in time and survived in the USA and Argentine respectively. Her husband, on the contrary, had to move into the Jewish Old People’s Home in Würzburg/ Dürerstrasse 20 in May 1942. Four months later, he was deported to Theresienstadt Concentration Camp via Nuremberg. The death list in this concentration camp mentions his death on April 9, 1943 without more detailed references to the circumstances. Her brother Victor was also deported and died in Theresienstadt in June 1943.
