biography

(Rosa) Ruth Boyle, née Cohn was born in Berlin on April 22, 1920 as the daughter of Siegfried Cohn and his wife Jenny, née Engel. Her mother came from Bad Kissingen. Her parents had established the flourishing spa hotel “Villa Engel” in Schönbornstrasse there.

After Ruth's father Siegfried died in February 1932, Ruth moved back to Bad Kissingen with her mother Jenny to the “Villa Engel” in July 1932. She seems to have quickly made friends with other Jewish young people there and volunteered to do gardening work in the Jewish cemetery in the spring of 1934. In her letter to the chairman of the Jewish communityexterner Link, she wrote: “As I have heard, we girls are also allowed to take part in the gardening work. I would now like to register my friend Nora Hausmann with her father's permission and myself with my mother's permission, Mr. Bretzfelder. We are happy to do unpaid work as often as our time allows. I thank you in advance, Mr. Bretzfelder, and welcome you, also on behalf of my mother. Rosa-Ruth Cohn.”

After her grandmother Sophie Engel had died in July 1934, 14-year-old Ruth and her mother emigrated to Haifa/ Palestine in November 1934.There she married the Mordochai Malka, who was born in Palestine but had the Spanish citizenship. She acquired Spanish citizenship and therefore lost her German citizenship. In 1937 their daughter Esther was born and their son Israel in 1938.

Mordechai-Malka
Mordochai Malka - Rosa Ruth's first husband

(Rosa) Ruth Malka didn’t stay in Israel. After the divorce from Mordochai Malka she emigrated after the war to the United States. There she always was called Ruth. In December 1953, she married her second husband, Carleton Boyle in East Orange, Essex. Obviously, the couple and Ruth’s mother lived in Mexico at the beginning of the 1960s. There, Ruth Boyle died in July 1965 at the age of only 45, roughly only four years after her mother had died.
