biography

Bella Weinberg, née Oppenheimer spent only one season in Bad Kissingen – presumably as an employee in Hotel Herzfeld. She came from a long-established Jewish family of the community of Schriesheim near Heidelberg whose ancestors can be found documents of as early as in the 17th century. Bella was born in Schriesheim on June 9, 1893 as the daughter of Zacharias Oppenheimer and his first wife Amalie, née Selig. Her mother seems to have died early as her father married Bertha Karlsberg in 1896. Bella’s father was a trader of flour and feed and seems to have been quite prosperous as he owned the first car in the village.

Bella Oppenheimer was registered in Bad Kissingen from May to August 1912 and worked for the hotel owner Moses Herzfeld.

Later, she married Hermann Weinberg and had two daughters with him: Else (*1923) and Inge (*1927). The couple and the children lived in Schriesheim. Bella’s father died in 1934 and was the penultimate Jew to be buried in the Jewish Cemetery of Schriesheim.

The Weinberg family managed to escape to the United States in October 1938. Bella’s stepmother Bertha could follow them one year later, thus the whole family survived.

Bella’s husband, however, died already in 1942 in New York. Her daughter Inge, m. Adler, visited her town of birth in 2013 on the occasion of the planting of the stumbling stone for the family in Schriesheim.

Bella Weinberg died in Scarsdale (State of New York) in July 1978 at the age 85.
