biography
Klara Bretzfelder, née Goldstein came from a long-established and respected Jewish family in Bad Kissingen. She was born in the Franconian spa on July 27, 1857 as the first child of Leopold and Hanna Goldstein. Her father was a merchant in Marktstrasse 14. After the death of his first wife Regina Eisenburg, he had married Hanna Hartmann, with whom he had four children, in 1856.
In 1891, Klara Goldstein married Nathan Bretzfelder from Estenfeld, with whom she had two children. With his spa hotel – “Villa Holländer” - he managed to establish himself as one of the best hoteliers in the town. In 1894, his son Sali was born who became a merchant after attending Kissingen Realschule and died in Innsbruck as early as in 1914. In 1895, her daughter Irma was born who married the doctor Dr. Sally Mayer from Fürth in 1923. In the same year, he opened his practice as a physician and bath doctor in the spa hotel of his father-in-law, “Villa Holländer”.
Klara’s husband belonged to the most respected citizens of the town. He was a member of Kissingen town parliament for 25 years continuously and for many years the chairman of the Israelite Religious Community. This didn’t protect him from despotism and repression after the Nazis had seized power. (See: Short biography of Nathan Bretzfelder)
After her husband’s death in February 1939, the widow moved into the Old People’s Home in Albrecht-Dürer-Strasse in Würzburg, where she died in August 1940 at the age of 87.
