biography
Hanna (also called Hannchen, Hulda) Rothschild was born in Bad Kissingen on February 10, 1884 as the second daughter of the master butcher Wolf Hamburger and his wife Jette, née Lustig.
She married the banker Jakob Rothschild and lived in Marburg with him. Their two children Walter and Erika were born there in 1909 and 1914. Her mother Jette, who had become a widow in the meantime, also moved there in 1919. We know only little about the further lives of the Rothschilds. Hanna and her family managed to flee into the safety of a foreign country. Together with her husband and her daughter she emigrated to Den Haag in the Netherlands in May 1939. Later, she went to Baltimore in the United States. Her son Walter could also emigrate there. According to US Census 1940 the whole family lived in a shared apartment in Baltimore.
Hanna’s very old mother Jette Hamburger was not able to or didn’t want to endure the hardships of an emigration. Till her death, she lived in her daughter’s apartment in Marburg. Luckily, she was spared her imminent deportation. She died on February 20, 1942 at the age of 83. (Death register Municipal Archive Marburg, mail from October 17, 2018).
Hanna’s husband died in 1949 in Baltimore at the age of 70. She outlived him by 15 years and also died in Baltimore in 1964 at the age of 80.
