Lilly Steuer, née Lichtenauer belonged to the students of Bad Kissingen Realschule who came from the rural areas around Bad Kissingen and went to school there for some years. She was born in Gerolzhofen on June 16, 1917 as the daughter of the cattle dealer Josef Lichtenauer and his wife Gerti, née Schloss.

In order to enable Lilly a better education, her parents sent her to Bad Kissingen Realschule, the predecessor of contemporary Jack-Steinberger-Gymnasium, after Elementary School. The reason for sending her to Bad Kissingen was surely the fact that Lilly could live with relatives in nearby Westheim. Her aunt Jenny (née Berliner) came from Westheim and one of Josef Lichtenauer’s sister had married Nathan Berliner from Westheim. She attended Bad Kissingen Realschule from April 1928 to the end of the school year 1930/31 and lived in Westheim during that time. Her grades were good and after class 3 she changed to “Mädchenlyceum” (girls’ secondary school, now: Olympia-Morata-Gymnasium) in Schweinfurt.

Only little is known about her further life. At first, she managed to emigrate to Great Britain where she lived in London. In July 1939, she went on board the “SS Washington” and emigrated to the USA. Her parents could also flee to London and were interned as “enemy aliens” till the end of the year. Her father died shortly afterwards in 1940, her mother succeeded in immigrating to the United States in 1944 with the help of a guarantee of her daughter. She died there in 1984 at the age of 93.

Lilly Lichtenauer married the Zurich-born merchant Max Kornmehl-Steuer in Newark/ New Jersey in September 1941. They had two children. She died in Teaneck, Bergen, New Jersey in January 2001 at the age of 83.
