biography

Friedrich Strauß belonged to the students of Bad Kissingen Realschule who became victims of the Shoa. He was born in the Middle Franconian Adelsdorf near Höchstadt on June 21, 1880 as the son of the cattle dealer and merchant Sigmund Strauß and his wife Sophia, née Loewi. He had two younger sisters Lili and Ida, who were born in 1881 and 1883. His mother already died from tuberculosis in 1883. In the next year, Sigmund Strauß married Charlotte Pul… from Schonungen.

In November 1891, Friedrich Strauß entered Kissingen Realschule, the predecessor of contemporary Jack-Steinberger-Gymnasium and stayed there for two classes to the school year 1893/94. During that time, he lived in Badgasse with the Mann family.

Friedrich Strauß became a merchant and in May 1912, he married ida Blättner from Schwanfeld and lived in Adelsdorf with her. He served in World War I as a soldier of the Royal Bavarian Army. His further life is only patchily known. After the Pogrom Night of 1938, he was temporarily imprisoned in Dachau Concentration Camp on November 12.

There are different statements about the deportation of Friedrich Strauß. According to the Koblenz memorial book, Friedrich Strauß was deported to the Lodz ghetto in 1942 and perished there. In fact, Friedrich Strauss and his wife Ida were among the 989 Jews who were deported to Izbica via Würzburg and Nuremberg on March 24, 1942, where they later died. A corresponding note can be found on the website “Statistics and deportation of the Jewish population from the German Reich”. This is also proven by a letter that Lina Stuhler, who was also deported from Adelsdorf at the time, sent from Izbica to her son Bernhard Stuhler, who was in Denmark at the time. Friedrich and Ida Strauß are also mentioned in this letter from May 1, 1942 (information Dr. ChrIstiane Kolbert, email October 18, 2023).
