biography

Julie Strauß was born in Obergimpern (now in the District of Heilbronn) on April 12, 1873 as the daughter of the merchant Emanuel Strauß and his wife Sarah, née Bader. The rest of her life can only be vaguely reconstructed. Possibly, the family moved to Mannheim (?) which is mentioned as her father’s place of death (registration card Municipal Archive Bad Kissingen). Shortly at least, she also stayed in Gailingen/ Upper Rhine, where her mother died.

Julie Strauß stayed unmarried all her life and worked as a nurse. In May 1925, after her mother’s death, she moved from Gailingen to Bad Kissingen into Salinenstrasse 34. There she worked as a nurse (“Schwester-Oberin”) in the Israelite Children’s Sanatorium. In April 1931, she moved to Garmisch-Partenkirchen. She stayed there for only a short time as she “lived in Würzburg as a prebentary as early as 1933, at first in Dürerstrasse 20, then in Konradstrasse 3”.

Julie Strauß was deported to Theresienstadt on September 23, 1942, where she died after few weeks on December 9, 1942” (Naomi Teveth, Tel Aviv, Biographische Datenbank Jüdisches Unterfranken).
