biography

Johanna Wahle, née Frank was born in Seligenstadt on January 30, 1883 as the daughter of Hermann and Olga Frank, née Jasmin. Her father was an outstanding person in the town and a successful merchant. He was also active in Seligenstadt’s Jewish community and became their chairman in 1913. Johanna had three siblings. Her brother Heinrich and her sister Martha were deported from Frankfort/ Main to Lodz and murdered there in 1941. Her younger brother Adolf (Andrew), a pharmacist, could emigrate to the USA in 1939. Her sister Bertha emigrated to the Netherlands and died there in Hilversum in 1941.

In May 1906, Johanna Frank married Sanitätsrat (honorary title for a doctor) Dr. Siegfried Wahle, who had lived in Bad Kissingen since 1902, and moved to the spa town. On May 5, 1907, their son Kurt was born. On October 24, 1908, their daughter Anna followed who died on August 26, 1921 at the age of only 12.

In 1938, Johanna Wahle left the spa town with her husband and moved into Hamannstrasse in Frankfort/ Main. When the Nazi terror increased in Germany, the two of them tried to emigrate to the USA, which failed because of lack of money and because of the strict visa regulations of the Americans. One year after the futile emigration attempt, Johanna Wahle died in Frankfort on November 5, 1940 and was buried in the Jewish Cemetery in Eckenheimer Landstrasse.

One year later, on November 22, 1941 her husband was deported from Frankfort Kowno (Kauen) and murdered.
