biography
Hedy Werner, née Klau was born in Poppenlauer in January 1908 as the youngest of the three daughters of the cattle and horse dealer Seligmann Klau and his wife Lina, née Vollweiler. Just like her two sisters, she also married a non-Jewish partner. After getting married to the baker and innkeeper Edmund Michael Werner in August 1930, she moved to Garitz (now a suburb of Bad Kissingen), where their son Helmuth was born in December 1931. The church wedding of the two took place (according to the church register) in Garitz in January 1932. Her sister Bertha and her family also lived in Garitz in the immediate neighborhood. The husbands of the two sisters, Edmund Werner and Kasper Diller each ran a restaurant in Garitz. Edmund Werner was the landlord of “Gasthaus zur Erholung” and Kasper Diller ran „Gasthaus zum Hirschen“ (later Jahnstrasse).
In the middle of the 1930s, probably in 1935, the Werner family moved back to Poppenlauer and emigrated to the United States in April 1936. Hedy’s sisters also managed to escape to the USA, together with their mother Lina. Their father Seligmann had already died in Poppenlauer in December 1937.
The Werner family lived in New York; Hedy died there in July 1987 at the age of 79.
