biography
Irene Würzburger spent the summer months of 1937 and 1938 in Bad Kissingen and was employed as a kindergarten teacher at the Israelite Children's Sanatorium during this time.
She was born in Gießen in March 1913. Her parents were the Wiesbaden-born merchant Josef Würzburger and his wife Martha, née Simons, who came from Hanover. Irene had two older siblings, Senta (1906 - 1995) and Irmgard (*1910), and her youngest sister Sigrid (Rudolfa) was born in December 1917.
Between 1923 and 1938, their father ran a paper, haberdashery and cleaning products business in Giessen. The Würzburgers belonged to the orthodox Israelite religious community.
Irene attended the extended girls' school in Giessen and then transferred to the lyceum, like her sister Irmgard. She was not transferred in the 1926/27 school year. She probably left the Lyceum, as she is no longer listed in the school records (information from Christel Buseck, Stolpersteine Gießen coordination group).
She probably lived in Giessen until 1937, then went to Bad Dürkheim for a short time and moved to Bad Kissingen for the first time in May 1937 and worked in the Israelite children's sanatorium in Salinenstraße until October. She was also employed there again the following year, when the children's sanatorium was granted a licence for the last time. In September 1938, she finally left Bad Kissingen and returned to her home town.
According to the 1939 minority census, she lived with her parents and her younger sister Sigrid in Giessen. Her eldest sister Senta had already emigrated to the USA in July 1937 and thus survived the Nazi era. Irmgard had fled to the Netherlands and lived with her husband Heini Christ in Amsterdam at the beginning of the 1940s. According to the Giessen local history researcher, she lived in Hamburg in 1987.
Irene Würzburger moved to Leipzig in April 1939 and was deported from Leipzig to the Riga ghetto in January 1942 and from there to the Stutthof concentration camp in October 1944, where she was murdered. Her younger sister Sigrid and her mother Martha were also victims of the Shoah: Sigrid was deported from Frankfurt to Raasiku, Harjumaa in Estonia in September 1942 together with her husband Nestor Weil and their baby Uri, who was only a few months old, and murdered in the nearby dunes. Her mother Martha moved to Frankfurt in June 1940, where her youngest daughter lived, and was deported from Berlin to Auschwitz in March 1943 and murdered. Her father Josef spent the last part of his life in a Jewish retirement and nursing home in Darmstadt in Eschollbrücker Straße. He died in November 1942, a few months before the last residents of the home were deported to Theresienstadt.
