Sabine Calmon, née Wittekind, came from a long-established, widely ramified Kissingen family whose roots go back to the beginning of the 19th century. Her grandfather Aron Simon Wittekind lived in the Judenhof and had been granted the right to live and practise a profession in Kissingen in 1806 as a ‘Schutzjude’ of the Barons of Erthal. He earned his living in the ‘silk, wool and cotton trade’ (cf. Kissingen address book 1838, p. 37).
Sabine's father Simon Wittekind (1821 - 1889), the youngest son of Aron and Regina Wittekind, was a soap boiler by trade, while her mother Klara (Gutel) Hamburger (1825 - 1922) came from a Jewish butcher's family that  lived here for generations. When Sabine was born in July 1853 (see entry in the Kissingen birth register, Bad Kissingen town archives - other databases incorrectly give 31 July 1856 as the date of birth), her parents were still unmarried because the restrictive Bavarian Jewish edict of 1813 prevented marriage until a matriculation position became available due to the death of a relative (see Hans Jürgen Beck, Chronik jüdischen Lebens...). It was not until April 1858 that her parents were able to marry and Sabine was now officially legitimised as a daughter. Sabine had two younger brothers: Aron, born in 1859, died just two months after his birth and Wilhelm was born in 1861.

In January 1877, Sabine Wittekind married Julius Calmon in Bad Kissingen, who came from a respected merchant family in Kyritz, a small town in the district of Ostprignitz-Ruppin in north-west Brandenburg, and moved to his home town after the marriage. Their son Felix (1877 - 1963) was born there in November 1877 and their daughter Sophie (1883 - 1935) was born in June 1883. In later years, the family lived in Berlin, where their daughter married Gustav Geis, a merchant from Magdeburg, in 1907, and their son Felix married Erna Amalie Kanter, a merchant's daughter from Berlin, in September 1912.
According to the Berlin address book, Sabine and her husband Julius lived at Klopstockstraße 30, where Julius Calmon died in February 1921 at the age of 71. Sabine outlived him by 14 years, dying at the age of 79 in Berlin-Schöneberg in August 1935.
Her daughter Sophie had died in Leipzig a few months earlier in April. Her husband Gustav emigrated to Brussels/Belgium. Sabine's son Felix, his wife Erna and their children Hans Hermann (1913 - 1979) and Marianne, married name Swarsen (1916 - 1997) managed to escape from Germany in time. They lived in New York after the war. After the war, Felix Calmon filed claims for restitution, including for the Wittekind family home at Promenadestrasse 5 in Bad Kissingen.
