biography
Alois Abzug was one of the Jews who immigrated from Eastern Europe and formed only a small group within the Jewish community in Bad Kissingen. He was born in May 1892 the son of Heinrich Abzug and Fanny (Feiga) née Krattenstein in Worona / Kolomea in Galicia. As an illegitimate child, he initially bore his mother's maiden name of Krattenstein, but later called himself “Abzug” after his father (see Bad Kissingen civil records) and also appears in the records (for example in the Bad Kissingen address book) as “Elias” Abzug.
In October 1919, Alois Abzug moved from Bad Reichenhall to Bad Kissingen. A year later - in September 1920 - he married Auguste Geffner, who also came from Galicia. Due to his origins, his residence status in Bad Kissingen was rather uncertain. In November 1920, the Bad Kissingen town council decided to expel Alois Abzug, who only had Polish citizenship, from Bavaria in accordance with the applicable administrative regulations. His wife Auguste therefore wrote to the Bavarian Ministry of the Interior requesting that her husband be granted tolerated status. She justified this request by citing her poor health and the fact that she was unable to run the family restaurant on her own. Her husband had never been guilty of anything. The matter was finally referred back to the city council, which agreed to temporary toleration in March 1921, but reserved the right to revoke it at any time.
Alois Abzug initially ran his deceased father-in-law's Israelite restaurant in Promenadestrasse, but shortly afterwards opened a laundry business at Bachgasse 2. Between 1929 and 1933, the Abzug couple lived at Salinenstrasse 29 and finally for a short time at Promenadestrasse 5 in Haus Wittekind.
The acceptance of Eastern Jews in the Jewish community of Bad Kissingen was obviously not very pronounced. In any case, Alois Abzug complained in a letter dated February 1929 to Samuel Hofmann, the chairman of the Jewish community, that he had not been invited to the general assembly of the Jewish community. He fulfilled his duties as a member of the community and therefore expected to be granted rights.
Alois Abzug and his wife Auguste emigrated to Palestine just a few months after the National Socialists came to power in November 1933. Nothing is known about their subsequent lives.
