Meta Steinberger, née May, was the aunt of the Bad Kissingen Nobel Prize winner Jack Steinberger. She only lived in Bad Kissingen for a short time and worked as a kindergarten teacher in the Israelite children's sanatorium in Salinenstraße.
Meta May was born in Nuremberg in September 1894 as the second daughter of the hop merchant Moritz May (1864-1926) and his wife Rosa Rosenstein (born in Schwabach in 1864). Her sister Bertha, Jack Steinberger's mother, was born in 1892, her younger brother Siegmund in 1897.
Meta May was 18 years old when she came to Bad Kissingen for two months in the summer of 1916 and worked as a kindergarten teacher at the Israelite Children's Sanatorium from July to September. 
A few years later, in July 1920, she married Julius Steinberger from Schonungen. His brother Ludwig Steinberger had married her sister Bertha a year earlier. Meta and Julius Steinberger had two daughters: Marianne was born in 1921 and Hildegard in June 1923. The family initially lived in Schonungen, then in Frankfurt in the 1930s, before the Steinbergers fled to England. In September 1939, they were living in Stoke Newington, a north-eastern district of London. They managed to enter the United States as early as February 1940. Many of the May/Steinberger family had found refuge there, including Meta's sister Bertha and her family and her brother Siegmund. 
Meta's husband Julius died in New York in March 1964, she outlived him by ten years and died in Tenafly, Bergen, New Jersey in September 1974 shortly before her 77th birthday.
