biography
Rachel Winter was born in Mönchengladbach on January 9, 1880 as the daughter of Josef and Sara Winter, née Rosenbaum. On December 28, 1909, she married Mendel Hirsch Bamberger from Bad Kissingen, who was four years her junior, and moved to the Franconian spa town with him. They had four children: Judith (born in 1911 and married to Stephan Wallenstein), Ruth Ella (born in 1912 and married to Menashe Dotan), Moses Löb/Martin (born in 1915 and married to Rivka Lehmann) and Benzion Seligmann Josef Friedel (born 1919 and married to Ruth Schüler). The family lived in Ludwigstrasse, where her husband practiced as a dentist.
Their Zionist attitude prevented the family from nourishing the fatal illusion of staying in Germany. They decided to emigrate to Palestine in time. The first one to make his home in Palestine was their then 15-year old son Friedel. Some months later - in November 1934 - Rachel and her husband followed him with their daughter Judith and their unmarried brother-in-law Isaak Bamberger. Rachel died in Jerusalem in April 1955, her husband had already died in 1942.
