biography

Selma Blum, née Steinfeld and her husband Hermann Blum lived in Bad Kissingen for only a short time. Selma was born in Josbach/ Hesse on June 21, 1892 as the daughter of Herz Steinfeld and his wife Johanna, née Katzenstein. The Steinfelds were a long-established, respected Jewish family that can be traced back to 1811 in Josbach. In an interview with the USC Shoa Foundation, Manfred Steinfeld, externer Linka nephew of Selma Blum, provides a highly revealing insight into the Steinfelds' family history and the everyday life of the Jewish minority in the community of Josbach.

Selma Steinfeld married the merchant Hermann Blum from Borken in Hesse in October 1920 and moved to his home town. In 1923, her daughter Hilde was born there, in 1928, her daughter Margot. In the 1930s, the family also seems to have lived in Oberhof/ It couldn’t be found out if there was any kinship relationship there. Thuringia. Maybe Hermann Blum was employed in the renowned Hotel Blum there.

After the Aryanization of the hotel in April 1938, Hermann Blum and his wife moved to Bad Kissingen for a short time. Selma Blum worked as a chambermaid in Bella Regensburger Sanatorium, from July as a caretaker in Apolant Sanatorium. On September 24, the Blums signed out for Niederfell/ Moselle.

A short time later, Selma and her husband moved to Leipzig, as documented by the German minority census of May 1939. From there, Selma Blum was deported to the Riga ghetto with her husband and two daughters on 21 January 1942. At the beginning of November 1943, her husband was taken to Auschwitz and murdered in the same month. Selma Blum and the daughters were taken to Stutthof Concentration Camp in October 1944 and died there.
