biography

Nelly Bloch, née Strauß, was born on July 3, 1912 as the first child of the wine wholesaler Max Strauß and his wife Johanna, née Hamburger in Munich. His father came from a cattle dealers’ family in Geroda, whereas his mother came from a long-established butchers’ family in Bad Kissingen. The two had married in Munich in 1911 and lived there until 1919. In June 1919, the family moved from Munich to Kurhausstrasse in Bad Kissingen, where Nelly’s younger brother Rudi was born. Since March 1929, the family lived with Stumpf in Salinenstrasse 29.

In June 1932 Nelly Strauß moved to Luzern/ Switzerland, in 1934, they were registered in Baden-Baden and returned in October of the same year to her parents in Bad Kissingen.

In August 1936, they emigrated to the United States. Her parents left Bad Kissingen two years later and also went to the USA. Nelly lived in New York and in May 1942 married Julius Bloch who had been born in Eichstetten am Kaiserstuhl. Not much is known about her later life. Her husband died in Tel Aviv in January 1992. She outlived him by only few weeks and died in March 1992 in New York at the age of 79.
