biography

Greta (Margarete) Zofar, née Neuberger was a student at Kissingen Realschule for a short time and lived in the Franconian spa town during that time. She was born in Haßfurt on June 9, 1912 as the daughter of the merchant Max Neuberger and his wife Bertha, née Hiller. She spent the first years of her life in Haßfurt where her father ran the wholesale textile business of “Samuel Neuberger” that he obviously had taken on from his father. He committed himself in the Jewish community.

In April 1923, at the age of 10, Greta entered Kissingen Realschule and lived with the family of her uncle Dr. Fritz Neuberger in Promenadestrasse 5c. She was – as the lists of her grades show – a good and gifted student. In September 1924, she already left Bad Kissingen again, continued her education in Würzburg and graduated with her Abitur in the Sophienschule there in 1932. Afterwards she began studying medicine at Julius-Maximilians-Universität in Würzburg.

In 1934, Greta Neuberger married Willi Pfeuffer from Würzburg who had grown up in an orthodox Jewish merchant’s family. After attending Röntgen-Gymnasium (grammar school) he got a training as a farmer, presumably to get prepared for his emigration. Shortly after their wedding, the couple emigrated to Palestine in July 1934. After their emigration they called themselves Atara and Zeef Zofar. In May 1936 their first child Miryam was born. The family later lived in Moschaw Sde Yaakov near Haifa where Greta Zofar worked as a headmistress. Greta Zofar died in July 1988 at the age of 76. Her husband outlived her by four years.

Greta’s brothers Albert and Hermann could also escape Nazi terror. Her older brother Albert emigrated to England in 1934 and became a well-known Professor of Pathology. The younger brother Hermann succeeded in fleeing to the United States. There, he became a respected orthodox Rabbi who also had an influence on politics. After 1979, he managed to help great parts of the Jewish population of Iran to emigrate and get their acknowledgement as asylum seekers accepted. (See: Wikipedia article on Hermann Neuberger). Greta’s mother Bertha could also flee to the USA via England in 1939. She died in Maryland in 1974. Her father had already died in Würzburg in 1931.
