biography

David Bichowsky was a wealthy businessman from Riga, who in the 1920s was the owner of “Lieb’s Terrassen-Café”, the former “Café Lohengrin” in Bismarckstrasse. He was born on September 3, 1876 as the son of Usiel Bichowsky in Mogilewas/ Latvia (which belonged to the Russian Czar’s Empire in those days). His daughter Feiga was born in Krustpils near Riga/ Latvia in August. She lived in Bad Kissingen between 1923 and 1924 and made her living as a domestic worker in Hotel Herzfeld.

Whether and when David Bichowsky lived in Bad Kissingen has remained unclear so far. What is clear is that he was the owner of “Lieb’s Terrassen-Café” in Bismarckstrasse. It was leased to Jakob Lieb in those days. David Bichowsky who is also mentioned in the Bad Kissingen Directory of 1926 as its proprietor had the Café rebuilt into a manorial house. At the end of the 1920s, “Lieb’s Terrassen-Café” closed. The whole plot was annexed to the neighbouring “Genesungsanstalt” (recovery institution) which had been renamed “Versorgungsanstalt”. On David Bichowsky’s former plot, a residential building for the Head Doctor was established. (See article in MAIN-POST, ‘Vom Café Lohengrin zur Klinik‘, Sept. 4, 2016)

David Bichowsky live in Riga in the 1930s. In his second marriage, he married Zinaida (Slata) Gos. She gave birth to another son who was born in 1932.

Immediately after the invasion of German troops into the Baltic countries in summer 1941, the systematic killing of the Jews living there begun. David Bichowsky, his wife and the 9-year-old Usiel became victims of the extermination activities in that same year. No details are known about that.

Only David Bichowsky’s daughter Feiga who managed to emigrate to Palestine survived the Nazi-era.
