biography

Rosa (Rosel) Schuster, née Blumhof, was born on April 11, 1898 in Grebenau in the middle-Hessian District of Vogelberg. She came from a long-established Jewish family, whose roots in Grebenau can be traced back to the 18th century. Her parents were Seligmann Blumhof, a butcher, and his wife Karoline, née Apt, who had been born in Breitenbach near Kassel. Rosa Blumhof grew up in a family with many children together with eight siblings, most of whom were younger than her.

In August 1935, she married the merchant Julius Schuster, who was 20 years her senior, in Bad Kissingen and moved into the Franconian spa town. Her husband ran a business in Lindesmühlpromenade during the spa season (called ‘Noris-Magazin’ (Noris-Storeroom) in the Bad Kissingen directory). In the winter months, the couple lived in Frankfort/ Main. In October 1938, they left Bad Kissingen for good and lived in Frankfort till their emigration. Only after the beginning of the war – in Spring 1940 – Rosa and Julius Schuster succeeded in fleeing to the United States via Genova. There, they were at first received in New York by Julius’ son Max.

Rosa’s parents died in Frankfort before their names were put on the deportation lists. Of Rosa’s six siblings who were still alive in the Nazi Era, her youngest sister Jenny managed to flee to Switzerland, Siegfried emigrated to England, and August survived in the United States. On the other hand, her siblings Berta, Fanny and Mayer were deported from Frankfort and murdered in the extermination camps in Eastern Europe.

Only little is known about Rosa’s further life. Her husband Julius died in Manhattan in August 1949. In the early 1960s Rosa moved to Florida. She outlived her husband by nearly 50 years and died in Florida in August 1996 at the age of 98.
