biography

Elli Rosenberg, née Herz lived in Bad Kissingen for only a short time. She was born in Saarbrücken on February 3, 1915 as the daughter of Julius Herz and his wife Else, née Aberle from Mannheim. Her father came from one of the oldest Jewish families of Saarbrücken. In 1911, he founded the “Saarbrücker Senffabrik Gebr. Herz” (Saarbrücken mustard factory of the Herz brothers) which had to stop its production in World War I as Julius and Moritz were drafted for military service. After the war, in 1920, the factory was newly founded and called “Moritz & Julius Herz o.h. G. – Großhandung” (general partnership wholesale firm).

On June 2, 1935, Elli Herz, who was 20 years old at that time and unmarried, moved to Bad Kissingen and began an apprenticeship as a cooking trainee in Hotel Ehrenreich in Theresienstrasse. As early as in September 1935, she already left the spa town again. In the Bad Kissingen registration files, “on tour” is given as her destination. A short time later, Elli emigrated to Palestine via Trieste harbor and arrived in Jerusalem in November 1935. Elli’s father had to work as a night watchman there. He suffered from a stroke in 1944 and was paralyzed as a consequence of it. Julius Herz died in Haifa 1949 In February 1949. Elli’s mother Else died few weeks later, in March of the same year.

Only very few details are known about Elli’s life. In March 1937, she married Walter Rosenberg who had been born in Bärwalde/ Pomerania (now: Barwice, Zachodniopomorskie) in Haifa, who had emigrated to Palestine in December 1936. The couple had three children, of whom only their daughter Nurit, who was born in Petach Tikva in 1938, is known by her name. Elli’s husband Walter died in December 1973 at the age of 62. Elli Rosenberg died on October 22, 1993 at the age of 78.
