biography
Inge Juliane Brown, née Dressel lived and worked in Bad Kissingen for only few months. She was born in Erfurt on March 9, 1921 as the daughter of the shoemaker Karl Dressel and his wife Trude (Gertrude Bertha), née Bär. Her parents had married in Wiesbaden, Trude’s hometown, in 1917. In 1924, Inge’s sister Dorothea was born. Shortly afterwards the family moved to Wiesbaden and lived in Biebricher Strasse 14, according to the Wiesbaden directory of 1925/26.
In April 1938, Inge Juliane Dressel being 17 at that time, moved to Bad Kissingen for one spa season. She lived with Rosamunde Löwinsky in Theresienstrasse as a subtenant and was employed at the Israelite Children’s Sanatorium as a children’s nurse. Before she had worked as a sales assistant. At the end of August, Inge Juliane Dressel already returned to Wiesbaden. Only a short time later – the exact date is not known – Inge Juliane emigrated to England with her parents and her younger sister. Together with her mother Trude she lived in the London Borough of Hendon till 1951. Her father Karl had died in November 1945 – shortly after the end of the war. Her younger sister Dorothea had left England in September 1945. It hasn’t been found out so far where she went.
The further life of Inge Juliane Dressel is also only partly known. She emigrated to South Africa in 1951 and married Jack Brown who had been born in Lithuania in 1899. His family had moved to Grahamtown in the British Cape Colony/ South Africa in 1901. Jack Brown first was a merchant and then the director of a company and often undertook business trips to England and also to the USA. In the 1930s, he was married to the Johannesburg-born Sonja Rappoport. The couple had twin daughters. The marriage was later divorced and Jack Brown married Inge Juliane Dressel.
In May 1953, their son Anthony Kevin was born. In the following years, the family stayed on living in South Africa but emigrated to England at an unknown date. Inge Juliane’s husband died in London in October 1992; she herself died there on October 3, 1997 at the age of 76.
