biography

Lina Hamburger, née Reich was born in Wonfurt near Hassfurt in Lower Franconia on June 4, 1865 as the second child of Salomon and Nanny Reich. Her father, who was a livestock wholesaler as well as a farmer, was one of the richest inhabitants of the community of Wonfurt. He was co-owner of the cattle dealer society “Neuburger, Reich & Co.” in Wonfurt, who had managed to become a considerable cattle and horse wholesale business of nationwide renown that got a lot of respect on the wholesale markets of Germany (Letter from Raimund Vogt, Gemeindearchivar Wonfurt, July 3, 2018).

Lina was married to the Kissingen master butcher Emanuel Hamburger. Their son Siegfried was born in Bad Kissingen in March 1902 and already emigrated to the USA in 1923. The couple also had two daughters: Hertha, married Hausmann, and Ida. Lina’s husband already died in January 1906 at the age of 53. The butchery was then taken on by her son-in-law Max Hausmann, who married Lina’s oldest daughter in the same year. Lina’s parents Salomon and Nanny Reich apparently moved to Bad Kissingen later on. Both of them died in 1908 as their gravestone on the Jewish cemetery of Bad Kissingen shows. Lina Hamburger lived in Obere Marktstrasse 10 for a long time (between 1902 and 1920). Then she lived in Hartmannstrasse 17 for two years and between 1922 and her departure for Frankfort in September 1935 in Oberer Markt 9.

She was deported from Frankfort to Theresienstadt in August 1942 and in September of the same year from there to Treblinka, where she was murdered. An exact date of her death is not known.
