biography
Hertha Hausmann, née Hamburger came from a long-established, widely branched Jewish family of Bad Kissingen who had been butchers for centuries. She was born in the Franconian spa town on September 28, 1887 as the oldest daughter of Emanuel Hamburger and his wife Lina, née Reich. Her father had a butchery in Obere Marktstrasse 10.
After her father had died on January 21, 1906 at the age of only 53, the trained butcher Max Hausmann from Hüttenheim in the district of Kitzingen took on the business and married Hertha Hamburger in March 1907. The couple had two daughters: Anny was born on December 23, 1907 and in January 1920 Nora followed her. Anny Marx emigrated to the USA after her marriage in 1939. Nora, married Ballon, also emigrated to the United States and survived.
In September 1935, Hertha Hausmann, her husband Max and her mother Lina moved to Frankfort into Kronberger Strasse 49. There, her husband Max died in December 1935. Hertha Hausmann seems to have left Germany at the last second. In June 1941, she boarded the ship “Villa de Madrid” in Barcelona and emigrated to the United States. In August 1942, at the age of 77, Hertha’s mother Lina was taken from Frankfort to Theresienstadt and in September of the same year deported to Treblinka and murdered there.
In the USA, Hertha Hausmann lived in Chicago with her daughter Anny and her son-in-law Eugen Marx, who already emigrated in 1939.
Hertha Hausmann died in Chicago on March 8, 1958 at the age of 70.
