biography
Anny Hines, née Hausmann was born in Bad Kissingen on December 23, 1907 as the first child of Max Hausmann and his wife Hertha, née Hamburger. She had a younger sister Nora who was born in 1920. Her parents owned a butchery in Obere Marktstrasse 10. Her ancestors from her mother’s side belonged to the long-established Hamburger family who had been butchers for generations.
In June 1932, Anny Hausmann married Eugen Marx who was born in Frankfort and from then on lived in Mainz and Frankfort. In 1935, their son Ernst was born. The family managed to emigrate to the United States in time. Anny’s husband arrived in New York in April 1939. Some months later, Anny and her then 4-year-old son went on board the “SS Bremen” and soon reached New York. According to US Census, in 1940, the family lived in a shared apartment in Chicago together with Anny’s younger sister Nora who had emigrated already in 1938.
Her mother Hertha, who had become a widow in the meantime, also managed to flee to the USA via Barcelona in 1941, literally at the last minute. She lived together with Anny and her family in their apartment in Chicago till her death in 1958. Eugen Marx, Anny’s husband who was 14 years her senior, had already died in February 1950.
After the death of her first husband, Anny Marx was married again to Julius Hines. Later she lived in Pacific Palisades/ California and died in St. Monica in January 2001 at the age of 93.
