biography
Siegfried Gutmann was born in Bad Kissingen on September 28, 1886 as the first of five children of the merchant and cattle dealer Aaron Gutmann and his wife Karoline (Lina), née Löwenthal. Since September 1896, he attended Kissingen Realschule, the predecessor of contemporary Jack-Steinberger-Gymnasium, which he graduated from successfully in July 1902. He lived with his parents in Salinenstrasse 8. In 1909, Siegfried’s father died. Siegfried's younger brothers Berthold and Leopold had already emigrated to the United States in 1914 and 1922, respectively.
And Siegfried left Germany too, he emigrated to France around 1920. His wife Marguerite Cerf had been born in Paris in 1901. Before their emigration, the couple lived in St.-Didier-au-Mont-d’Or/Rhone. In February 1938, Siegfried Gutmann got a passport from the Argentinian Consulate in Paris and first emigrated to Argentine. He lived as an Argentinian citizen in Buenos Aires – like his brother Julius - in the district of Avenina Saenz Pena and worked as a merchant. In September 1940, he got an immigration permit for a visit to Brazil. At that time his official name was Siegfried Fred Gutman. His wife Marguerite could emigrate with him, too.
There is no secure information on the further lives of the two of them.
Clothilde Löwenthal, the widow of Maier Löwenthal, a relative of Siegfried Gutmann, wrote in August 1956 to an acquaintance in Bad Kissingen that Siegfried Gutmann was living in Paris and was a millionaire. He stayed in Bad Kissingen at the moment in order to sell plots of land and shops owned by the family. Clothilde Löwenthal’s information has so far always proven reliable but in this case, there hasn’t been any further proof been found. What is known is only the date of death of Siegfried’s wife Marguerite Eve. She died on November 16, 1979 in Arrondissement 14E in Paris.
