biography

Karoline Gutmann came from the long-established Kissingen family of Löwenthal. She was born in Bad Kissingen on October 17, 1859 as the first child of the “Ökonom” (farmer) Simon Löwenthal and his wife Therese Süßer.

Karoline (Lina) married the cattle dealer Aaron Gutmann who came from Autenhausen near Staffelstein and moved to Bad Kissingen after the marriage. Between 1886 and 1896, their five children were born here: Siegfried (*1886), Julius (*1888), Berthold (*1889), Paula married Oppenheimer (*1892) and Leopold (*1896). Lina’s husband died in August 1909 and his widow lived in several rented apartments in the spa town till 1933. On September 25, 1933, she moved to her daughter Paula in Finkenhofstrasse 24 in Frankfort where her son-in-law Leopold Oppenheimer had a wine business.

Karoline Gutmann died on February 11, 1936 in the Georgine Sara von Rothschild Hospital in Frankfort at the age of 76.
