Paula Oppenheimer, nèe Gutmann was born in Bad Kissingen on July 1, 1892 as the daughter of the merchant Aaron Gutmann and his wife Karoline (Lina), nèe Löwenthal.
In February 1914, she married the merchant Leo Oppenheimer who was born in Mainz in 1880 and lived with him in Frankfort/ Main (See: registration of an apartment 1916/17 in the registration files of Bad Kissingen). In April 1916, their daughter Leni (Helen) was born. In the summer months of 1916 and 1917 her parents took her to her grandparents in Bad Kissingen. Paula and her daughter were in Bad Kissingen again between June and August of 1918. Leopold Oppenheimer owned the wine business “Schmitz & Co.” in Frankfort and lived in Frankfort’s Nordend in Finkenhofstrasse 24 with his family. Paula’s widowed mother Karoline lived there as well since 1933.
In October 1933, when the situation for Jewish citizens in Germany became more and more precarious, Paula, her husband and their daughter succeeded in emigrating to the United States. They went on board the “Manhattan” in Le Havre and on arrival in New York were taken care of by Paula’s brother Bert who had emigrated to the United States already in 1914 and had an apartment in St. Long Beach. According to the US Census of 1940, they lived in New York where Paula’s husband Leo already died one year later in February 1941 at the age of 60. Paula Oppenheimer was 82 years old when she died in Statesboro in the State of Georgia in November 1974.
